From diagnostics in medicine to driverless cars - the range of applications in the field of Digital Image Processing is constantly growing. In September of 2020, almost 20 students from the Nuremberg Institute of Technology (Nuremberg Tech) had the opportunity to take part in the course "Digital Image Processing" given by Dr. Alaa F. Sheta, Professor at the Southern Connecticut State University (USA), to learn more about AI and digital transformation of processes in this field. Since it was not possible to hold a classroom event due to the Corona crisis, the main challenge was to hold the course live online from the USA. With a lot of effort and organizational skills, Prof. Sheta, with support from Nuremberg’s research assistant Michael Stumpf, succeeded in making the course possible as a climate-friendly, online version at the Faculty of Computer Science. The students were able to gain profound insights into the topic "Digital Image Processing". An exciting mix of theory, practical examples and exercises made it possible to gain knowledge via videoconferencing and practice right away using the MatLab software. The feedback from all participants was very positive. "I've learned a lot from the course. There are so many interesting areas of application, for instance, in the field of medicine, which were not completely obvious to me in advance," says Markus Kucharzik, a student of Information Systems. Co-initiator Prof. Peter Rausch is also very pleased: "We thank Prof. Sheta for the great guest lecture, his commitment and flexibility to hold the course online live from the USA during the Corona pandemic."
Even if an in-person visit compared to the online version could have had additional benefits in terms of internationalization, Nuremberg Tech, Germany and Southern Connecticut State University, USA are moving forward in this field. But the most important thing was: Despite the Corona crisis, the students gained many new insights into a highly exciting and future-oriented subject.
