Iaedp's Symposium 2012 Celebrates Diversity in Membership

Professional Eating Disorder Conference Increases Relevance with Multicultural Emphasis and Bilingual Presentation

PEKIN, ILL. (March 6, 2012) – The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp) will celebrate the diversity of its international membership March 22-25 at Symposium 2012 in Charleston, S.C. Multicultural events hosted by the International Relations Committee (IRC) include the 2012 International Forum, "Food for Thought—The Relevance of Cultural Issues in Treating Eating Disorders," at a special lunch program from 12:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. March 23.

"This discussion will provide treatment professionals with essential information and insight on treating eating disorders among different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds,” said Bonnie Harken, managing director at The iaedp Foundation. “It’s a must-see part of the program that addresses the issue of eating disorders worldwide. Collectively these efforts bring diversity front and center within iaedp's mission, efforts and membership."

International Relations Committee Chair & iaedp Board Member Dr. Eva Trujillo leads a knowledgeable group of IRC committee members during the International forum including: Dr. Ovidio Bermudez, FAAP, FSAHM, FAED, CEDS; Dr. Divya Kakaiya, CEDS; Dr. James Caryl, CAB; and Dr. Anita Johnston, CEDS.

In addition to the special lunch program, The iaedp Foundation will honor international attendees with the Symposium’s annual kickoff flag procession during March 22’s Opening Gala. The procession will be led by South Carolina's renowned Citadel Rifle Legion and will feature flags from Australia, Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, India, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States. IRC Committee members and international guests will also take part in the procession.

To further the spirit of international collaboration in training, Dr. Emmett "Rick" Bishop, one of the International Relations Committee’s founding members, will provide a Spanish translation of his Symposium presentation, "Trait Management (Manejo de los Rasgos)."

Symposium 2012’s one-world experience celebrates the coming together of professionals from across the world for a single event to share, learn and inspire continued support for patients from every part of the globe.
