Heart of a Warrior Foundation Welcomes Spring With Free Community Festival

Heart of a Warrior Foundation (HOAW) presents the 2012 Spring Festival, a free event to celebrate family and community and launch registration for HOAW’s 2012 Summer Learning Program. The Spring Festival will take place on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton Park located at 12225 Willowdell Drive in northeast Dallas. The HOAW-sponsored festival will include games, activities, food and more. Families can also learn about HOAW’s Young Warriors Summer Learning Program, which provides educational opportunities and support for underserved children throughout Dallas.

The Spring Festival will feature a scavenger hunt, multiple bounce houses, face painting, an egg hunt, an appearance by the Easter Bunny and opportunities to win prizes. One participant from each age group in the scavenger hunt will win an iTouch and anyone who signs up for the Young Warriors Summer Learning Program will have a chance to win a new bicycle. Parents can obtain free children’s identification kits from McGruff the Crime Dog and meet with representatives of the local police, firefighters and animal control during the event.

“The Spring Festival is an opportunity for families to have fun together in a community setting,” said Gail Warrior, founder and chairwoman of HOAW. “While families are enjoying the festival, it’s also an opportunity to introduce them to HOAW and our summer learning program, where children are encouraged to learn and be productive leaders in the community through tutoring and education-based activities and field trips.”

Warrior founded HOAW in 2007 to provide continued enrichment during summer months to boost children’s academic learning. The goal of the Summer Learning Program is to eliminate the tremendous learning gap often seen in lower-income students in the fall caused by the lack of high-quality activities and educational studies during the summertime. Last year, 388 students, aged 6-15, participated in the program.

“Our program isn’t the typical arts and crafts projects of summer camps past,” said Misha Sturns, executive director of HOAW. “Instead, HOAW’s eight-week Summer Learning Program is designed to help underserved area-children bridge the gap in education and life skills that many would not otherwise have access to. The program is staffed with trained professionals who provide hands-on instruction Monday through Friday for three hours a day, with enrichment field trips that add to the student’s quality-of-life experiences.”

Registration for the HOAW Spring Festival begins at 10:30 a.m. on March 31 and parents and children are encouraged to come early and meet with representatives and instructors from our three summer learning locations where special incentives are in place for those who register during the Spring Festival.
