heat 11 solar wins another order for a thermal solar power plant in Spain
The Bielefeld specialist for heat transfer and thermal oil applications heat 11 has received another major order for the supply of heaters for a solar thermal power plant in Spain. For the 50 megawatt (MW) parabolic trough power plant “Arenales” near the city of Morón de la Frontera in Andalusia the Flagsol GmbH, in cooperation with the Ecolaire S.A., has ordered three heaters with a capacity of around 16 megawatt (MW) each.The Flagsol GmbH from Cologne has been a specialist for solar thermal large-scale power plants for many years. Ecolaire España is an enterprise of the Spanish construction company OHL (Obrascón Huarte Lain) located in Madrid. The heaters are among the key components of the heat transfer system of the power plant. After the commissioning at the end of 2013, the capacity of the power plant will be sufficient to supply approximately 50.000 Spanish households with environmentally friendly electricity.
This is already the second order for heaters that heat 11 has received. In March 2011 heat 11 took an order with heaters for the solar thermal parabolic trough power plant „Extresol 3“ which is currently also under construction. In this type of solar thermal power plant, the irradiation is focused by parabolic reflectors onto an absorber pipe in which thermal oil circulates as heat transfer medium. The heated oil is used to generate steam by a heat exchanger which generates power via a steam turbine, as in a conventional power plant. The power plant Arenales has also thermal salt storage systems so that power can be generated also at night. “Hereby an almost 24-hour operation is possible in the summer months - a major advantage over the photovaltaic plants!” explains Stephan Kraus, general manager of heat 11 solar.
The power plant Arenales belongs to RREEF Pan-European Infrastructure Fund of the Deutsche Bank (49 percent), to the developer of solar projects Solar Millennium AG (26 percent) and OHL Industrial (25 percent). The plants of heat 11 are among others for heating of the heat transfer circulation and for the controlled start of the power plant before sunrise and the capacity of each is 16 MW. The used boilers are 15 m high and their diameter is 3.5 m. Besides boilers, burners and chimneys, the scope of supply contains also the required control systems, the installation and assembly supervision and the commissioning of all three plants.
Heaters for solar thermal power plants are a part of the heat 11 range of products in the field of renewable energies which also includes plants for the production and treatment of heat, electricity and gas from biomass. “heat 11 is one of the most innovative providers”, says Stephan Kraus, general manager of heat 11 solar. “The new order and many running inquiries and projects show once more that heat 11 with its partners make an significant contribution to achieve climate-friendly, reliable and economical solutions to meet the growing global energy demand.“
