"With a National Tutoring Professional Body, UK Private Tutors Cannot Command the Salaries of US Super-Tutors”, says Private Tutoring Specialist Adam Caller

Press release from: Tutors International

Oxford-based Tutors International (http://www.tutors-international.com), responded today to recent articles by Rosie Kinchen [1] and London Private Tutors, Will Orr-Ewing [2] and Mark MacLaine [3], about the salaries commanded by ‘super-tutors’ - top-flight private tutors who can command fees of up to £1000 per hour.

This breed of super-tutor emerged in New York and Hong Kong, while British tutors were relatively unnoticed. When asked why this was, Tutors International founder, Adam Caller, said, “In Hong Kong tutoring is about prestige and gimmicks. In the US the unique importance of their SAT means parents are prepared to pay more for the best private tutors for their children, to stand a chance of getting into the best universities. The UK doesn’t have an exam quite like the SAT, upon which that child’s entire educational future hangs. For that reason, the US tutoring market is very results-driven and competitive, while the average UK private tutor can be just that – average.”

UK parents are accustomed to paying around £30-50 an hour for a full-time private tutor, rather than the £1000 per hour commanded by super-tutors. In the UK there is no formal training needed to become a tutor, and no professional body for the industry, so the quality of tutoring cannot be guaranteed.

Caller commented, “Finding a private tutor can be a lottery for a lot of parents. In the UK, private tutors are usually recent graduates recruited for a year or so, to earn some money before their first “proper job”. They don’t have to undergo any sort of tutoring training, and there isn’t a professional body that parents can seek advice from, complain to, or ensure the quality of the tutoring they’re paying for. If there is no control of the tutoring profession, why would UK parents pay these super-tutor prices?”

Tutors International are a leading tutoring service, providing tuition for students around the world. Caller insists that an industry standards body is vital for the UK tutoring profession. “There are excellent tutors out there and we need to safeguard their salaries, reputation and profession, as well as providing quality private tutors for parents.”
