Press release from: Boston Center for Adult Education

This February, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE), New England’s oldest educational nonprofit, is adding an innovative program to their ESL department . Every Friday the BCAE will hold “ESL Movie Club,” designed to improve language skills and knowledge of American culture through mainstream films.

From 1:30PM to 4:30PM movie-goers, (ESL or not) will meet in the BCAE’s state-of-the-art classrooms to view and discuss a different Hollywood film chosen for its particular portrayal of American English speakers as well as its social and cultural commentary. A wide variety of genres, ranging from psychological thrillers to films featuring the unmistakable Boston accent, will be explored. After each viewing, an instructor from the BCAE will lead the class in a discussion about the film’s use of language and its social commentary. An optional writing assignment will be given to those who wish to practice their language skills further; learning how to use movies as a tool for studying English is an invaluable skill for ESL students and is the ultimate goal of the Boston Center for Adult Education's ESL Movie Club. The cost of each session is only $10 per student, and it does not require enrollment in additional ESL classes or pre-registration.

The BCAE’s ESL Program offers a community where students can confidently learn how to improve their English listening and speaking skills. The program strives to create a community where non-native English speakers can focus on achieving their goals of mastering American English.
