Press release from: Adelphi University

As a part of the 2011-2012 Guest Artist Series, the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) will host recording artist, singer-songwriter, and pianist Bruce Hornsby for a performance to be held on Friday, February 10, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in the AUPAC Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The Guest Artist Series has proven to be a particularly exciting one for the AUPAC this year. The Concert Hall is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand venues for the greater Long Island community to see world-renowned artists such as Broadway singer-songwriter Simone and Emmy award-winning Hal Linden’s sold out show in December.

Bruce Hornsby is a multi-genre improvisational artist best known for the spontaneity and creativity of his live shows who, over the years, has successfully ventured into jazz, classical, blues, rock, bluegrass, and even electronica. In his two-and-a-half decade recording career, not only has Mr. Hornsby won the Best New Artist, Best Bluegrass Recording, and Best Pop Instrumental Grammys, but he has also been nominated 13 times. In reference to his intensive solo gigs, Hornsby says that they have helped him to “recommit to the study of piano” and “take [his] playing to a whole new level.” His commercial music soared early on when “The Way It Is”—the title track of Bruce Hornsby and the Range’s 1986 debut album—became the most-played song on American radio in 1987, and then won The American Society of Composers’, Authors’ and Publishers’ (ASCAP) Song of the Year award. “The Way It Is” and subsequent hits like “Mandolin Rain” and “Every Little Kiss,” established Hornsby as a popular pop act while high-profile work with the likes of Don Henley and Huey Lewis made him an in-demand collaborator.

Despite Hornsby’s early successes, he chose to pursue a more personal and eccentric musical path focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest and musical progress. His eclectic musical interests have been reflected in a wide array of recording projects with a prestigious list of collaborators including, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Chaka Khan, Tupac Shakur, and Sting. Bruce Hornsby says that he is “…a bit of a musical [zealot]…always hoping to turn the audience on to more adventurous music and music that’s below the mainstream radar.” Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, adventurous, and remarkably accomplished careers in contemporary music that draws from a vast wellspring of American musical traditions and stylistic approaches.
