Even with the cold temperatures hitting many areas of the United States, winter weather doesn’t have to equal indoor workouts. There are plenty of exercises that can still be performed outdoors even during frigid months. 1. Dress in Layers when Exercising Outdoors
To conserve body heat and stay dry, dress in layers. Start with a base layer of synthetic material, then add an insulation layer and possibly a top layer of wind-breaking materials like light jackets or pants. Use a face mask, gloves and a hat, depending on the weather.
2. Warm Up Cold Muscles
The body will stay warm once it’s warmed up, but it’s important to get it there, first. Cold muscles lead to injury, so do an extra-long warm-up before heading outdoors to exercise.
3. Stay Hydrated
It’s a no-brainer that water is needed when temperatures are in the 100s, but staying hydrated is also important when temperatures are in the 20s and 30s. Sweat can happen at any time during a workout. Replenish the lost water through frequent stops for hydration.
4. Take a Cell Phone
Don’t get caught without a phone in the event of heat loss, fatigue, dizziness or trouble. A phone is a quick lifeline to immediate help.
5. Review the Forecast
If a strong storm front is about to come through, avoid the long run. Watch the weather for precipitation, air conditions and road conditions to know how to stay safe while working out.
