BITS Pilani alumnus Deepak Krishnamurthy completing PhD at Stanford named 2020 Schmidt Science Fellow

The challenges such as Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), anti-microbial resistance, climate change, food insecurity, bio diversity, an aging population and species extinction faced by the world at large are indeed broad, deep, and multi-faceted. Such challenges demand that the best scientists work on them with an interdisciplinary approach and possess a broad world-view informed by the intersections between science and society. Say, to gain a full appreciation of the intricacies of organismal growth and form physicists, geneticists and computer scientists must work together.

The Schmidt Science Fellows, in partnership with the Rhodes Trust, seeks to create a new generation of scientific leaders. The Science Fellows program which is now in its third year is part of Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The selected Fellows receive a $100,000 stipend for the year long post doctoral program and are paired with an internationally accomplished and experienced senior scientist who provides mentorship.

It is a matter of great pride that Proud to be BITSian Deepak Krishnamurthy who completed his B.E (Hons) Mechanical Engineering (2007 - 2011) from Institution of Eminence Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani with distinction presently completing his PhD from Stanford has been selected as Schmidt Science Fellow. He did his masters program from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research - JNCASR before moving to Stanford. At Stanford he is completing his PhD from Prakash Lab Department of Bioengineering.

His Research Interests include Ocean Biophysics; Engineering for biology, Fluid Mechanics; Soft Matter; and Applied and Computational Mathematics. As a Schmidt Science Fellow, Deepak has plans to combine molecular and computational science for studying microscopic life in our oceans and how they affect planetary cycles. Deepak with his roots from Chennai has a passion for music which he continues to nurture as a member of SPICMACAY Stanford.

As the coordinator of the classical music and dance club Ragamalika at BITS Pilani , Deepak a carnatic music vocalist and mridangam player was well known among BITSians for staging thematic classical productions. When Deepak says "My journey to become a scientist/engineer started at BITS Pilani and the broad based interdisciplinary curriculum of my Alma mater instilled not just the curricular training but inspired me to be creative and fearless, things I value greatly even today", everyone gets that Proud to be BITSian feel good factor.
