88 year Old Madurai Super Senior Citizen Halasyam Donates his entire Pension for COVID-19 Fight

Media covering Garhwal Rifles Janardan Prasad Ranakoti donating 2 months pension to PM CARES Fund is more about CDS General Bipin Rawat than the retired jawan. Media only highlights large hearted donations like 1000 Crores by Wipro Azim Premji, Ratan Tata 1500 crores, Reliance Mukesh Ambani 500 crores, Vedanta Anil Agarwal 100 crores, Adani 100 crores, Aditya Birla Group 500 crores, Bollywood Sabse Bada Khiladi Akshay Kumar 25 crores and Anand Mahindra who has pledged his entire salary.

Media has no time for a senior citizen born 1932 on Mahalaya Day, Sri Halasyam from Madurai who is a renowned architect and Vastu Sastri known all over Madurai for his expertise in the field. An avid photographer and member of National Geographic Society, his collection of books include a rare copy of Mooligai Mani book a most sought after book in Siddha Medicine system of AYUSH. The second most beautiful Railway station in the country, Madurai Railway station with Majestic Meenakshi Temple Gopuram foreground design team included him.

Born in a not well to do pandit family, he had a struggling childhood and served the army during 56-58. He was involved in the Vaigai dam project and it is folklore in family circles about his cycling trips to Madurai a distance of 68 kms in nonexistent roads. He joined the office of Madurai Railway Division which is the largest divison in Southern Railway and had a distinguished service of over three decades. He did play the role of god father for his half a dozen brothers and sisters for educating them and getting them married.

Sri Halasyam is proud that his wife Chellammal extended whole hearted support last sixty years of their married life. He has four daughters and son each glittering with glory in their respective spheres of profession. Eldest daughter Booma with double masters in Chemistry and Child Care is Principal of a lead school Smt Jamuna Mishra Academy at Pilani Rajasthan. He is proud that she is leading a team from her school for corona virus relief at Pilani.

The second daughter Gaurice Sanka aka Kalyani holds MCom and with a flavor of Charted Accountancy, she is a well known go getter do gooder social worker and logistics expert in Goa. Third daughter Dr Srividhya holds LLM (Gold Medalist), MA Human Rights (Pondicherry University) and is Principal of VPM TMC Law College Thane. Fourth daughter AIIMS alumnus Dr Hema holds triple masters MSc MA MBA and is Principal at Faculty of Nursing Dr MGR Educational and Research institute University Chennai.

The only son Dr Viswanatha Prabhu a former Major of Indian Army Medical Corps and recipient of Tamil Nadu Governor prestigious Best Performance Award is presently Senior Assistant Surgeon at Elumalai Government Hospital near Madurai. Daughter in Law Dr Vidhya Prabhu who holds MBBS MS is teaching at Madurai Medical College. Strict disciplinarian and fitness freak, Sri Halasyam is proud that his children are contributing to national development in providing education and healthcare.

Earlier, he has contributed his entire pension amount to Prime Minister Relief Fund or Chief Minister Relief Fund for 1999 Kargil Operation Vijay, 2004 Tsunami, 2015 Chennai Floods, 2018 for Gaja Cyclone as well as Kerala Floods. He is sad that 42 per cent COVID-19 patients are in age between 21 to 40 years. Well versed in Vedic hymns, he wants this generation to watch Ramayan and Mahabharat serials not for entertainment but to know about Indian culture, value system and ethics.

For World Health Day his message is that young generation must be more disciplined in their living style, food habits and put nation above all in their endeavors. On 30 Mar 2020 he donated his pension money to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Relief Fund to fight corona virus menace and got a standing ovation from Bank of Baroda Ponmeni branch. It is unfortunate that Madurai headquarters various media houses but none chose to cover. Nation at large indeed needs more Halasyams.
