A new systematic review about the role of Chloroquine & Hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 infection

Coronavirus pandemic is a global health emergency and there is no pharmacological treatment known to treat this condition till now. There is a strong need to review the role of available drugs in COVID-19 infection. While there are studies in medical literature to describe the role of chloroquine & hydroxychloroquine in different viral conditions, there is limited information about their role in COVID-19 infection. A new systematic review 'Role of Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine in the Treatment of COVID-19 Infection- A Systematic Literature Review' by Krishan Mohan Kapoor and Aanandita Kapoor, provides the summary of the available evidence about the role of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 infection.
In this review article, The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines were used and a literature search was performed to find articles about the role of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients.
The search results for this systematic review came up with 19 publications till 23rd March 2020 including five published articles, five pre-proofs of accepted articles, three letters/correspondence, one abstract of yet to be published article, one commentary, and four pre-prints (not yet peer-reviewed) articles. All these articles mentioned the role of chloroquine and /or hydroxychloroquine in the infection with SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19.
The conclusion of this review shows theoretical, experimental, preclinical and clinical evidence of the effectiveness of chloroquine and/or hydroxychloroquine in patients affected with COVID-19. There is adequate evidence in the medical literature about the drug safety due to the long-time clinical use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in various other indications. More clinical data from the ongoing & future trials will shed more light on the role of chloroquine & hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19.
