University of Minnesota Prof Ramesh Harjani Conferred BITS Pilani Distinguished Alumnus Award

Research interests of Prof Ramesh are in the area of analog and RF circuits for communication systems with particular emphasis on CMOS designs. His Current research efforts focus on the development of high-performance front-end component designs for broadband and multi-standard wireless systems and the development of next generation high-speed wired communication systems. His Other research areas of interest include biomedical devices, data converters and sensor interface circuits, analog circuit synthesis and micro-power analog circuit design.

After his schooling from Kathmandu Nepal, Prof Ramesh (Kat to his BITSian buddies) graduated with a BE (Hons) Electrical & Electronics from Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani (1977-1982) followed by MTech from IIT Delhi and PhD from Carnegie - Mellon University Pittsburgh USA. He was an avid photographer, adventurer and dare devil who would not hesitate to scale 10 feet wall to have a midsummer night splash in the swimming pool or trek 3000 feet in Himalayan slopes to bring firewood for breakfast cooking.

Apart from a Post doctoral candidate, he has supervised 33 doctoral candidates and an equal number of MS students for theses. He has conducted 29 short courses covering a wide spectrum of areas. His 70 invited technical talks cover various countries which include USA, Canada, France, Netherlands, Poland, India, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Japan. He has won over two dozen awards which include the coveted Edgar F. Johnson Professor in 2010, IEEE Fellow in 2005 and Motorola-University Partnerships in Research Award, 2000 / 2001.

He has also been Senior Editor, Guest Editor and Associate Editor for a host of journals. His professional journal articles and conference papers exceed 200 and his Google Scholar citation analysis has an amazing 5215 citations (1417 since 2015, h-index 37 (17 since 2015) and i10 index 106 (44 since 2015). He has authored / coauthored 9 books and contributed to chapters in 13 books. With 16 patents to his credit, one more is in line for getting added up.

The Kohinoor in his crown of glory is his Founding Bermai (2001-2004) and the seismic tremor in the industry caused by the Bermai announcement of the first ultra - integrated single chip wireless systems for high-speed networks continues to reverberate till date. He is indeed a passion packed alumnus who does not believe in sitting under the glory of his alma mater but firmly believes that one can add altitude to Alma mater only by achieving glory in chosen career.

On 12 Mar 2020, in a glittering function held at BITS Pilani NAB Auditorium, Proud to be BITSian Ramesh Harjani was conferred the Prof L K Maheshwari Foundation Distinguished Alumnus Award. He also gave a talk titled "Wireless Communication: SINR - Signal to Interference Noise Ratio highlighting low power radios and interference resistant radios which got a thunderous round of applause. His entire batchmates from different parts of the world congratulated him for keeping the batch flag flying higher.
