Combi station for pumping and extraction applications

KNOLL Maschinenbau, Bad Saulgau, has developed a compact pump back station which can be fully integrated into machine tools. This system, known as combi station RIP / RIS, it is suitable for connecting both to central filtration systems and to central extraction systems.

The combi station RIP / RIS is designed for chip disposal on machine tools and is fully integrated into the machine. The means that only the connection extends from the machine - either on a pipe system routed to the filtration system (pump back station RIP) or to a central extraction system (extraction station RIS).

Whereas the combi station in the RIP version is suitable for automatic conveyance of coolant and chips, i.e. in wet machining operations, the RIS version is solely designed for the conveyance of dry or moist chips. The systems are identical in terms of their design. Up to four feed screws are integrated in the machine bed. They convey all chips produced by metal cutting - with or without coolant - to the connected disposal station, where they are finally fed into a pump back tank. This is where the RIP and RIS versions are different.

In the pump version RIP, the metering screw starts up when when a pre-defined fill level is reached. The feed pump begins to run at the same time. The coolant/chip mixture is fed uniformly to the feed pump, which conveys it through a return line to the central or decentralised separation/filtration system.

In the suction version - which is normally used in dry machining operations - the feed pump is replaced by a suction line. When the specified fill level is reached inside the pump back tank, a slide valve opens and the chips are conveyed through the extraction system to the central extraction station.

Despite the limited availability of space, an aluminium chip breaker can be integrated into the RIP station. A feed pump with a breaker attachment is required for this purpose. Extra-machine solutions are available for the reduction of steel chips or any type of dry chips.
