Massachusetts Horticultural Society Offers Cell Phone Tour

In early July, Massachusetts Horticultural Society (Mass Hort) in Wellesley, MA, applied cell phone tours and QR codes to horticulture to bring itself into the twenty-first century. The new mobile tour program improves communications with visitors and helps them learn more about the Gardens at Elm Bank and Mass Hort.

Located in the historic Elm Bank Reservation, Massachusetts Horticultural Society is located on 36 acres and it maintains six beautiful gardens at Elm Bank: the Trial Garden, Weezie’s Children’s Garden, Bressingham Garden, Crockett Garden, the Italianate Garden, and the new Garden to Table Vegetable Garden. In additional, volunteers maintain another half dozen gardens at Elm Bank, including the American Hemerocallis Society Daylily Garden, the Noanett Garden Club stroll garden, the Alan Payne Rhododendron Garden and the Herb Garden.

Two internationally renowned designers/horticulturalists are featured on the cell phone tour. Julie Moir Messervy, the designer of Weezie’s Children’s Garden is featured at Stop 3 and Adrian Bloom, notable English nurseryman and designer of the Bressingham Garden is featured on Stop 4.

Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s mission is to help educate people of all backgrounds about the art and science of horticulture. The OnCell tour helps to engage and excite people about what is going on at Mass Hort and in the gardens. For example, during the composting demonstration tour, the cell phone tour allows people to learn about the composting process and how to set up a compost bin at their home. Listeners are also introduced to the historical significance of the Manor House and the Frederick Law Olmsted Brother’s Italianate Garden during the tour.

“On a recent garden club tour, club remembers were especially delighted to hear the voices of the designers who designed the Bressingham Garden and Weezie’s Garden,” said Mass Hort President, Katherine Macdonald.

The cell phone audio tour launched in early July of this year and is available during visiting hours: May through the end of October, 9am – 6pm. Visitors can listen to the tour by dialing 617-466-3067 or by visiting the mobile web tour: http://myoncell.mobi/16174663067.
