The estate of the late Julie Pais will be sold on-site Saturday, Oct. 29, in Panama City, Fla. at 9 a.m. (CST)

(PANAMA CITY, Fla.) – The estate of the late Julia Jean Pais -- a warm and friendly lady whose family and friends all called “Julie” -- will be sold in an on-site auction slated for Saturday, Oct. 29, at Ms. Pais’ former home, located at 113 Queens Circle in Panama City (zip: 32405) The auction will be conducted by The Specialists of the South, based in Panama City.

“Julie Pais had a quick wit, a quirky sense of humor and a fun-loving nature that naturally drew people to her, and her home was filled with items that matched her colorful personality,” said Logan Adams of The Specialists of the South, Inc. “She loved Henredon, Jasper and Ethan Allen furniture and owned hundreds of items that will most certainly be of interest to collectors.”

These items include Belleek fine Irish Parian china, Lenox Rutledge dinnerware and other Lenox accessory pieces, Lladro figurines, Hummel pieces, Royal Doulton, Florence figurines, Haviland Limoges, a collection of miniature Bulova clocks, Carlton Caprice and Nikko Provincial Japanese china, Italian hand-made Colony Blue glass stems and crystal stems.

Also offered will be colorful hand-painted Portuguese pottery, beautiful hand-made Portuguese framed needlepoint art, artwork (to include several decorative oil on canvas works), brass from Portugal, snow globes, tins, area rugs, cookbooks, beautifully made vintage ladies’ lingerie and a nightgown, and vintage dolls (to include several Madame Alexander Pollyannas).

Still other items to cross the block will include miniature porcelain animals, art glass pieces, about a half-dozen vintage cameras, a collection of smoking pipes and pipe stand, pocket knives, political and collectible buttons, and costume jewelry (to include Vatican jewelry).

Individual items of note will include a glass epergne with single trumpet, a Hull Little Red Riding Hood dresser jar, a Seth Thomas Napoleon mantel clock, a Gorham music box, a German Aker figure, a Black Forest (or continental) metal monster-themed inkwell, a retro vanity with bench seat, a bow-front lighted display, a Syroco sunburst wall clock, a trunk, a baker’s rack, and an ox yoke.

Furniture pieces will feature a Henredon watered glass china cabinet, a fine Ridgeway mahogany grandfather clock (with moon phase dial, triple chime movements and West German Black Forest movement), a Jasper china cabinet, a coffee table with shaped marble top, a drop-leaf table, Federal dining room furniture with inlaid table, a maple Federal bedroom suite with lyres and shield-shaped mirror, a lighted curio cabinet, a gorgeous mahogany Drexel corner cabinet, a mahogany buffet/side bar, a Lane Cedar Crest chest on raised legs, and accent tables.

Ms. Pais’s love of Portuguese items was handed down to her by her parents, who were natives of the Madeira Islands, once a Portuguese colony and where Portuguese is still spoken. Ms. Pais was born in the U.S., the youngest of three sisters. As a young woman, she worked retail in New York City and it is there she developed a love and appreciation for fine furnishings.

From retail she went into banking, rising to the rank of head teller at Bank of New York and later, after a relocation to Florida, head teller at First National Bank of Northwest Florida in Panama City. Over time, she developed superlative organizational skills and an uncanny knack for numbers. Until her death at age 89, she could recite anyone’s phone numbers with ease.

Ms. Pais had striking good looks in her youth, with strawberry blonde hair and deep blue eyes. She surprised people when she told them she was Portuguese. She was a career woman, a mother to two daughters, an accomplished cook and, later in life, a caretaker for her mother, her mother-in law and her husband. Her daughter described her as “a 4-foot-eleven-inch dynamo.”

For the most part the auction will be absolute (everything sells, regardless of price), but a few lots will have reserves (minimums). Online bidding will be handled by LiveAuctioneers.com (starting Oct. 11). Phone and absentee bids will also be taken. Previews will be held the week prior to auction day, by appointment, and on the morning of the sale (from 8-9 a.m., CST).
