The 21st century brings Asia to the forefront. The worldwide currency fluctuations, the potentially huge market, the production of low labor costs all contribute to the shift of the textile and clothing industry to this region.

In Hong Kong, SGS Hong Kong Ltd jointly hosted a seminar entitled ‘The Challenges and Opportunities of Fashion and Textile Industry in the 21st century’ along with the Vocational Training Council of Hong Kong (http://www.vtc.edu.hk/vtc/web/template/institute_desc_list.jsp?fldr_id=438). Held on May 27 2011, the seminar was designed to bring to light the challenges ahead and help begin the process of adaption and change within the textile and fashion industries with regard to changing market conditions. The goal is to seize opportunities rather than to be daunted by obstacles. The global supply chain in the apparel industry, procurement strategy, as well as an overview of global sourcing were the main topics covered.

Experts within the industry were invited to speak at the seminar (http://www.softlines.sgs.com/seminar.htm ) and information was shared with the audience regarding key issues such as updates to the regulatory framework within Asia and the global supply network. Industry leaders such as retailers, suppliers, buyers and merchandisers were all present at the event and positive feedback was gained from participants.

SGS now looks forward to future collaborations with its affiliates in the fashion and textile industry, with a renewed drive towards greater insight and innovation.

SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. SGS is recognized as the global benchmark for quality and integrity. With 67'000 employees, SGS operates a network of over 1'250 offices and laboratories around the world.
