Sullivan Willoughby's Peter Kim Min, Featured in a New Book on Variety in Corporate Law

Mr. Kim Min emphasized that for more variety to happen, firm management must be intensely focused on it

Sullivan Willoughby, a leading, full-service international law firm that is providing extraordinary practice of client service and engagement, leveraging remarkable legal talent across specialties and jurisdictions, is pleased to announce that a Sullivan Willoughby Partner, Mr. Peter Kim Min, is featured in a new book about the challenges of achieving greater variety in Corporate Law and what it takes to succeed as a lawyer from a historically underrepresented group in a profession where white men still hold a hugely disproportionate share of partnerships and leadership positions.
The book, Diversifying Corporate Law -- A Conversation with Four Partners at Top Law Firms, resulted in part from a roundtable discussion on Race, Inequality, and Law. Besides Mr. Min, the conversation included partners at three other firms.
The lawyers acknowledged the real progress the legal field has made in lifting barriers to women and people of minorities. For instance, two women and two men from the minorities, have held the positions of top layers both in private and governmental jobs. Others have become leaders of some of the nation's largest corporations and law firms.
However, none of these facts offsets the still-small numbers of Partners in Corporate Law, or the fact that women are not close to reaching parity with men in their percentage of partnerships. The Partners involved in the creation of the book spoke of the special challenges that come with their partnerships, including being perceived as "the ethnics" of the firm and their sense of obligation to help younger lawyers of color succeed.
"My fundamental disagreement is that great lawyers are not born, they're made," Mr. Min said. "There is nobody who is born a great lawyer. Great lawyers are made through experience, through hard work, studying the craft, making mistakes, taking some lumps and getting back up and learning from them. Also, from connecting with people who are willing to invest in you, take you under their wing, and help guide you in whatever environment you're in. So, the contribution I try to make is to give back in some small way to lawyers who are looking for guidance in their careers", he said.
