Turning stainless steel with Safety

New cutting material type 8625 for turning stainless steel comes from France

Rodgau/Hannover, 23 September 2011 - Precision tool maker Safety presents 8624 at the EMO, its new cutting material for turning which replaces the current grade 8525.

The new high performance turning grade has an extremely tough MT-CVD coating (Medium Temperature Chemical Vapour Deposition) with high coating adhesion. The newly developed, fine grained high cobaltsubstrate withstands even higher temperatures resisting plastic deformation and preventing early formation of built-up edges. Due to the coatings alternating multiple layers of titanium carbonitride (TiCN - for abrasive wear resistance) and aluminium oxide (Al2O3 - for high temperature resistance) and a gold coloured surface layer of titanium nitride (TiN) on the rake face, edge chipping and damage are reduced. The manufacturer claims that the tool life of these coated inserts is considerably increased.

"Our new 8625 cutting material is a highly efficient and reliable solution for turning stainless steels," says Holger Rabe, managing director of Safety Germany, "with it we can cover 80 per cent of potential applications." Depending on the cutting geometry it is also extremely well suited to everything from light pre-finishing to roughing even with a continuous cut. As application tests at Safety's CEROC laboratory (Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche sur les Outils Coupants) in Fondettes, France have shown, the new grade is the material of choice for high cutting speeds (vc up to 240 m/min).

After the EMO, turning inserts in 8625 quality will be available from stock. The application area M25 is optimised for stainless steel (austenitic, ferritic, PH & Duplex), however low-carbon steels and alloys with a nickel or cobalt base can also be easily machined. Inserts are available in many commonly required sizes in both positive (PM4, PM5) and negative geometries (F5, M4, M5, M7, 5G) as well as KNUX shape inserts.
