Universal Sensors and Transducers Interfacing Circuit Now on the Market
Barcelona, Spain – Technology Assistance BCNA 2010 S. L., a start-up, spin-off small-medium enterprise, has announced the global market introduction of the new Series of Universal Sensors and Transducers Interface (USTI) integrated circuit.Based on four novel patented measuring methods, the USTI IC has 29 measuring modes of all existing frequency-time parameters of electrical signal and suitable for any physical and chemical, electrical or non-electrical sensors and transducers with frequency, period, duty-cycle, pulse width modulated, phase shift and pulse number outputs. Key features are: broad input frequency range from 0.05 Hz to 9 MHz
(144 MHz with predivider); programmable, constant relative error from +-1 % to +-0.0005 % in all specified frequency range; non-redundant conversion time, scalable resolution, two identical channels and three popular sensors interfaces: RS232, SPI and I2C. In addition, the IC can be used for direct interfacing of capacitive, resistive and resistive bridge sensing elements.
The standard performances are the following:
• Frequency, fx 0.05 Hz – 9 MHz directly and up to 144 MHz with prescaling
• Period, TX 110 ns – 20 s
• Phase shift, Fix 0 - 360º at fxmax = 625 kHz at 50 % duty-cycle
• Time interval between start – and stop-pulse, 1.5 µs – 250 s
• Duty-cycle, DC 0 – 1 at fxmax ≤ 625 kHz
• Duty-off factor, Q1 E-8 – 8xE6 at fxmax ≤ 625 kHz
• Frequency difference, fX2 – fX2 with sign recognition, 0 – 9 MHz
• Period difference, TX1 – TX2 with sign recognition, 0 – 20 s
• Frequency ratio, fX1/fX2 5.5∙E-9 – 1.8∙E8
• Period ratio, TX1/TX2 4.0∙E-9 – 2∙E8
• Rotation speed, nX = (fX∙60)/Z, where Z is the number of encoder teeth
• Pulse width, tp 1.5 µs – 250 s
• Space interval, tS 1.5 µs – 250 s
• Pulse number (events) counting, NX 0 – 4∙E9
• Frequency deviation absolute DA1, 0-9 MHz
• Frequency deviation relative DR1, 0-100 %
• Resistance, Rx 10 Ohm to 10 MOhm with average relative error +-0.47 % and +-0.01 % error at splitting of the range into sub ranges
• Capacitance, Cx 50 pF to 100 uF with average relative error +-0.036 % and +-0.7 % the worst case relative error
• Resistive bridges, Bx must not include any internal components other than 4 arms forming a bridge
The USTI significantly reduces digital sensors, data acquisition and sensor systems design and introduces smart and intelligent features such as self-identification and self-adaptation. Custom design is possible on request.
The IC is available in 28-lead PDIP, 32-lead TQFP and 32-pad MLF packages and as IP for the use in microelectronics designs as IC, ASIC, ASIP, SoC, SiP, BioMEMS and Lab-on-Chip.
The USTI has numerous applications: digital and smart sensors and systems, measuring instruments (tachometer and tachometric systems, frequency counters, multimeters), data acquisition systems, semiconductor industry, automobile industry, etc.
“This is a great example of an innovative technology that has been developed through leveraging skills and techniques gained during our many years of sensor systems design experience”, said Mr. Javier Cañete, the global business development director at Technology Assistance BCNA 2010.
“The USTI is a further step in novel technology driven smart sensor system jntegration platform creation based on our product diversification strategy towards our mission of delivering the best value solutions for sensing applications ,” – added Mr. Cañete.

Technology Assistance BCNA 2010, S.L. (TAB) is a spin-off small-medium enterprise, founded in 2010 in Barcelona, Spain after very success European Project ‘Smart Sensors Systems Design’ (MEXT-CT-2005-023991 SMARTSES) in the frame of Marie Curie Chairs Excellence (EXC) programme with the aim to design, develop and promote new measuring and sensing technologies, based on novel, advanced methods of measurements of frequency-time parameters of signals. The TAB is the first manufacturer of electronic components in Spain. In 2010 the company has got the Best Sensors Products Award 2010. Main products, which are currently introduced to sensors market is a Series of Universal Sensors and Transducers Interface, a Series of Universal Frequency-to-Digital Converter (UFDC-1 and UFDC-1M-16) integrated circuits, Evaluation Board EVAL UFDC-1/UFDC-1M-16 and various smart, intelligent sensor systems on its basis.
One of the main objectives of TAB is to reduce existing gap between research and industry by introducing a new generation of cost effective smart sensing technology and to establish our digital measuring technology and it's advantages as alternative to common analogue measuring principles to enter the large application potential in sensor technology. Developed technologies and electronics components give a unique opportunity to create and produce various digital sensors, multisensor systems and robust sensor systems with high metrological performances and wide functionalities including such intelligent functions as self-adaptation and self-identification. It is a basis for a new technological platform for smart sensor systems integration.
The TAB is dedicated not only to continuous enhancement of the existing product range, but also to responding to customer demands and suggestions with a high degree of flexibility and openness. This ensures that all solutions are custom tailored and represent the state-of-the-art in ultra-precise measurement technology for frequency-time parameters of signals.
