New Research In Action Vendor Selection Matrix Report(TM) - Application Release Orchestration SaaS and Software: The Top Global Vendors 2020
While IT teams have adopted many different sets of tools across their development environments, repositories, CI/CD, code review, release orchestration, log management, containers and configuration management for automation, the number of tools and frameworks within the DevOps tool chain available today are daunting. The challenges IT teams face to understand, interconnect, and apply much of these will be a high priority in 2020. The competition is fierce and flourishing and mergers and acquisitions continue.Additionally, more open source tools are emerging to integrate new technologies. To survive the challenges of complexity, it's becoming increasingly important to have an automation strategy which should first focus on actual problems the team is trying to solve.
While many organizations are trying to figure out which legacy DevOps tools to replace with new ones, other organizations are only at the beginning of the automation journey. The speed and quality of application releases has a direct impact on a company's customer experience which is why the adoption of Application Release Orchestration should be a high priority with IT Enterprises today.
Research In Action GmbH continues to expand its areas of coverage and publishes its newest market analysis report Vendor Selection Matrix (TM) - Application Release Orchestration SaaS and Software: The Top Global Vendors 2020. The Vendor Selection Matrix(TM) is a unique, primarily survey-based methodology for comparative vendor evaluation. A minimum of 60% of the evaluation results are based on a survey covering 1,500 and IT buyers in enterprises worldwide. The analyst's opinion accounts for a maximum of 40% of the evaluation results (not close to 100% as in most other vendor evaluations).
Application Release Orchestration (ARO) solutions equip IT enterprise organizations and their teams with the automation of their software deployment cycle across a hybrid technology environment. The ARO solutions evaluated include the following functionalities:
o Ability to model the resources and the releases themselves
o Automate the delivery of the releases
o Integrate with workload automation, IT process automation and service orchestration tools
o Support for multiple application environment and technologies
o Reporting and analytical capabilities.
The analysis concluded the following vendors as the top vendors in the Application Release Orchestration in alphabetical order:
o Broadcom (CA)
o CloudBees
o Flexagon
o IBM
o Micro Focus
o Microsoft
o VMware
o XebiaLabs

Eveline Oehrlich, Research Director for IT Automation at Research In Action GmbH comments:
o Tool fatigue is a key issue within DevOps. Too many tools already exist in the tool baskets of both developers and IT operation teams. Challenges of integrations, adoptions, breadth and depth of solutions all will shape this market in 2020. The competition is fierce and flourishing and while mergers and acquisitions continue more open source tools are also emerging.
o Integration and open standards will ease the pain for DevOps teams. Reflecting on the 10th year of DevOps anniversary, DevOps teams have matured and are expanding their use cases. However, the maintenance of tools within the tool chain has grown significantly. Integrations with ITSM, APM and out-of-the box APIs have received high marks when asked about investment priorities and creates a new opportunity for vendors to expand their toolchains with more functionality and open standards as a foundation from which more automation can be built upon. Acquisitions or mergers (e.g. XebiaLabs, CollabNet VersionOne combination by private equity as of January 2020) will continue throughout the coming year.
o Automation continues to be the lifeline of DevOps. Bringing tools together through leveraging integration technologies continues to be a priority for DevOps teams. Addressing different stakeholders which are using a variety of tools expands the breadth and depth of the existing solutions and will spur additional mergers and acquisitions in the future.
o Software as a service (SaaS) becomes the preferred method of deployment. Speed, deployment and reduction of cost is not only the focus of the DevOps teams when it comes to the delivery of new or changes within the software lifecycle but also the number one investment category when the DevOps team looks at new or different vendor solutions. Almost all vendors offer their ARO solution via SaaS.
