    Amoebiasis is an inflammation of the intestines caused by a parasite named Entamoeba histolytica. After malaria and schistosomiasis, amoebiasis is the parasitic disease with the highest rates of morbidity and mortality. According to the World Health Organization about 70,000 people worldwide die a annually due to amoebiasis. Although considered a tropical parasite, the first case of infection reported in 1875 was actually in St Petersburg in Russia near the Arctic Circle. Infection, however, is more common in warmer areas, but this is equally due to poorer hygiene as to the parasitic cysts surviving longer in warm moist conditions. In India, amoebiasis is a very common problem.
   
 The microscopic parasite enters the body through contaminated food or water. It can live in the intestine without causing symptoms, or it can produce severe symptoms. Symptoms can range from diarrhoea to dysentery with blood and mucus. Severe ulceration of the gastrointestinal mucosal surfaces occurs in less than 16 per cent of cases. In about 10 per cent of invasive cases, the amoebae enter the bloodstream and may travel to other organs in the body. Most commonly, this means the liver since it is there that blood from the intestine reaches first, but they can end up almost anywhere. On average, about one in 10 people who are infected with E. histolytica becomes sick from the infection.
   
 Everyone is believed to be equally susceptible and there is no evidence that individuals with damaged or undeveloped immunity may suffer more severe forms of the disease. Infections can sometimes last for years. To help prevent the spread of amoebiasis around the home:

• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and hot running water for at least 10 seconds after using the toilet or changing a baby’s diaper and before handling food.

• Clean bathrooms and toilets often paying particular attention to toilet seats and taps.

• Avoid sharing bath or hand towels.

• Avoid raw vegetables when in endemic areas, as they may have been fertilised using human faeces.

• Drink only boiled or bottled water and pasteurised milk or dairy products. Entamoeba histolytica infection is associated with malnutrition and stunting of growth. Some people try bitter leaves like neem, vegetables like bitter gourd and other homemade remedies to ‘kill’ the amoeba, but an overdose of these only hinders the digestive process. Instead, use homeopathy for swift, sure, long lasting results.
  
I remember the case of a 35-year-old travelling salesman. He suffered from recurrent amoebiasis and had been from doctor to doctor searching for a cure.
