Fastlane Autocare recommends regular tyre testing following motorist concern about hard shoulder closures

Summary: Following RAC research which revealed 72% of motorists are concerned about their safety on new smart motorways, which do not have hard shoulders, Fastlane Autocare has advised motorists to keep their cars and tyres in good repair to avoid motorway breakdowns.

Body: Fatlane Autocare, a mobile tyre fitter in Manchester, Liverpool and the North West, has told motorists to check their tyres and vehicle safety in the wake of research showing widespread concern about smart motorways.

The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2019 revealed 72% of motorists worry they won’t be able to reach an emergency SOS point if they break down on a smart motorway, and 68% believe removing the hard shoulder compromises driver safety.

Commenting, Kevin Burke, for Fastlane Autocare, said:

“Breaking down on the motorway is a harrowing experience with a hard shoulder, and this is worsened on smart motorways without these safe areas to pull over.

“The best way to avoid breaking down on smart motorways is to ensure your car is in a good condition, and as tyre damage is the most common cause for motorway breakdowns, it’s vital to check your tyres before any long motorway drive.

“Although smart motorways will reduce congestion, I hope this does not compromise driver safety.”

Car tyres have an expected safe use lifespan of five years. They are legally required to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm – the Fast Fit Centre recommends 3mm – and should be free of damage and bald spots.
