Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) are sealed lead-acid batteries, which include Gel and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery designs that can be substituted in virtually any flooded lead-acid battery application (in conjunction with well-regulated charging). They deliver an ideal solution for many applications over conventional flooded batteries. They are called valve regulated due to ability to limit inflow and outflow of gas to the cell. Also, they contain starved electrolyte (acid), which is absorbed or immobilized in a separator. Electrolytes are commonly absorbed or immobilized in two ways, which include absorbed electrolyte, a highly porous mat made from microglass fibers is partially filled with electrolyte, acting as a separator and gelled electrolyte, which is fumed silica is hardened into a gel that free-floats in its container. VRLA works by utilizing a one-way, pressure-relief valve system to achieve oxygen normally produced on the positive plate, which is absorbed by the negative plate. This suppresses the production of hydrogen at the negative plate. Water (H2O) is produced as the byproduct instead of retaining the moisture within the battery.

VRLA has various advantages over other batteries such as they are maintenance-free, they have moderate life, high-rate capacity, high charge efficiency, no memory effect, state of charge can determined by measuring voltage, relatively low cost, available in a variety of sizes and voltages from single cell units (2v) to 48v or higher, which is major driver for growth of valve regulated lead acid batteries market. Furthermore, increasing adoption of these type of batteries in various application such as golf cars, electronics and electric vehicles, portable power, wheelchair, scooters, marine trolling, race cars, telephone switching, renewable energy, computer backup, and emergency lightening is fueling growth of the valve regulated lead acid batteries market. However, VRLA has some disadvantages such as it cannot be stored in discharged condition, it has relatively low-energy density, lower cycle than NiCad batteries and thermal runaway can occur with incorrect charging or improper thermal management which makes these batteries more sensitive to temperatures than conventional lead-acid batteries. These are the key factors restraining growth of the valve regulated lead acid batteries market.

To help the US Army meet this need, ABC is leveraging their advanced GreenSeal bipolar technology to produce bipolar, AGM, valve-regulated, lead-acid (VRLA) 4HN and 2HN batteries.
