Western Blotting

Western Blotting

Western blotting is a technique used for detection of protein. It is also called as immunoblotting technique wherein specific antibodies are used to detect antigens. It works on the principle of molecular weight of the proteins and specificity. Gel electrophoresis is used for the denaturation of proteins and to obtain the primary antibody. Blotting and testing is performed later where the primary antibody binds to its specific antigen. It gives a qualitative and semi – quantitative type of analysis, i.e., it can evaluate size and amount of protein. Western blotting technique has several applications in diagnostics and confirmatory tests and is also used for qualitative analysis of proteins and cells and in blood doping tests.

Market Dynamics

Increasing research and development activities, development products related to western blotting, and high prevalence of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, tularemia, some of the lyme diseases, and paraneoplastic pemphigus diseases For instance, in October 2018, IGeneX Inc. developed Bartonella MultiSpecies Western Blots method for the detection of infection due to Bartonella. This method can identify and differentiate between B. henselae, B. vinsonii, B. Quintana, and B. elizabethae species of Bartonella in human serum or plasma. Furthermore, in March 2016, GE Healthcare started a new research and development lab in Turkey. It is equipped with advanced products of GE Healthcare such as Cytell cell imaging systems, Wave bioreactors, and Amersham western blotting system. Therefore, these factors are expected to augment the global western blotting market growth.

Increasing applications of western blotting technique is expected to boost the global western blotting market growth over the forecast period

Western blotting technique has several applications in research and development activities and diagnosis of diseases. The technique enables detection, prevention, and cure of diseases and is also used for gene expression studies. For instance, in February 2019, researchers from Fudan University, Shanghai, China conducted a research on HMGB3 (protein coding gene) to inhibit cancer cells in breast. The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of HMGB3 on tumor growth and mammosphere formation in breast cancer. Western blotting technique was used to evaluate the expression of the protein, encoding HMGB3 for inhibition of the tumor growth in breast cancer. Similarly, researchers from Beijing Tuberculosis and Thoracic Tumor Research Institute, Beijing, China conducted a study on TPM4, which is considered as a biomarker for ovarian, colon, and breast cancer. The western blotting technique was used for detection of protein levels in cancer cells.

Key companies covered as a part of this study include, Thermo Fischer Scientific, Aviva Systems Biological Corporation, CANDOR Bioscience GmbH, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Precision Biosystems, Cygnus Technologies, Merck KGaA, Cell Signaling Technology Inc., Advansta Inc., and GE Healthcare Solutions.

Increasing prevalence of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)/AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is expected to boost global western blotting market growth over the forecast period

High prevalence of HIV/AIDS is expected to increase demand for western blot technique for the diagnosis and treatment of these chronic conditions. According to World Health Organization (WHO), in 2017, around 35 million people were suffering from HIV/AIDS worldwide, of which around 1.8 million were newly infected with HIV. The western blot test is used as a confirmatory test. It separates the blood protein and identifies the number of HIV antibodies. Therefore, this factor is expected to boost global western blotting market growth over the forecast period.
