MIRADOR HONORS VOLUNTEER FROM THE MARCH OF DIMES
Jerry Wade started volunteering for the March of Dimes in 1987 through his job in the Army, and he continues to serve the organization 24 years later during his retirement. Because of this selfless devotion, Mirador senior living community is recognizing Jerry Wade as the second recipient of the 2011 Mirador Salute to Seniors Award. Victor Guzman, executive director for the March of Dimes – Corpus Christi Division, nominated Wade for the honor.“Jerry has dedicated his time and love to the March of Dimes for the last 20 years,” said Guzman. “Jerry is without a doubt a very generous and dedicated volunteer and most importantly a friend of the March of Dimes. I am honored to nominate an individual who has made an impact on the mission of the March of Dimes. The mission of our organization is made possible by people like Jerry.”
The Mirador Salute to Seniors Award is presented quarterly to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community. Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit, and citizenship.
“Mr. Wade has served the March of Dimes so faithfully over the last 20 plus years,” said Cindy Waldron, executive director at Mirador. “It is because of committed volunteers like him that these organizations continue to be successful and are able to offer such wonderful services to the community.”
Wade got involved with the March of Dimes in 1987. He was serving the Army as an officer at the Army Depot, and Marie Doty, the director of the March of Dimes at the time, asked if Wade could assist and get the Depot involved in the organization’s fundraising walk, now called the March for Babies. Wade’s commander in the Army asked him to sit on the board of the March of Dimes, and he’s been sitting there ever since.
“I think everybody ought to do a little something for the community,” said Wade. “It wasn’t an accident that Marie came to see me and got me involved. You ought to contribute something – a little bit of your time.”
Currently, Wade’s primary roles with the organization are sitting on the board and working on logistics for the March for Babies. For Wade, serving has become a family affair. Recently his sons have gotten involved in helping with the walk and have recruited some of their friends to get involved.
Wade, 73, retired as an officer from the US Army after 30 years of service. After retiring, he took a job for McTurbine and worked there for 12 years. During that time he continued to faithfully serve the March of Dimes. When he’s not volunteering, Wade enjoys spending time with his wife, 5 children and 11 grandchildren.
The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. For more information, visit www.marchofdimes.com.
