Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky & Abate Associate Scott Zucker Graduates Leadership Broward XXIX With Lasting Impressions; Now An Attorney, Iraq War Veteran Discovers Leadership Experience Takes a Multitude of Forms

With law books now his weapons and his battles fought in the courtroom rather than in the Iraq War, former U.S. Army Sergeant Scott Zucker—now an attorney at Colodny, Fass, Talenfeld, Karlinsky & Abate—recently earned an honor on a different front with his June 2011 graduation from Leadership Broward Class XXIX.

Trained in airborne operations, land navigation and basic infantry tactics, Zucker brought leadership skills of a different order to his Leadership Broward class, which focused on group dynamics and organizational styles by connecting the Broward business community with local non-profits in need of professional assistance and mentors.

During the year-long program, Zucker and Class XXIX created a pilot homework assistance program for children of parents receiving services from the Women in Distress program. Zucker, who applied his logistics knowledge gained from experience writing deployment orders, as well as country and theater clearances for soldiers deploying overseas, was involved in planning and implementation of the homework program, as well as actual tutoring in subjects such as reading and math.

Remarkably, the rewarding aspect of his involvement was not only the gratification of helping a child navigate through strange circumstances and difficult family developments, but the realization that his presence often became the very first positive personal interaction some children ever had with an adult male.

“I thought less about the actual work and became more concerned that they had a normal male role model,” Zucker explained.

Impacted by the experience, Zucker has committed to continue the success of the homework program by helping to introduce it at the planned Women in Distress facility in Deerfield Beach.
