StreamGuys, Inc. first to implement new technology for point-to-multipoint Internet Radio “Rebroadcasting” service

Barix AG, a pioneer in IP-based audio, intercom and control/monitoring, introduces a new software application for low-latency streaming in its Instreamer and Exstreamer IP audio encoding and decoding devices. The application, based on the unique Barix Real-Time Protocol (BRTP), is specifically designed for radio stations and broadcast groups who wish to deliver a live signal from one studio to multiple Internet radio outlets without the typical delays associated with audio streaming.

StreamGuys, Inc., a Northern California-based content delivery network, offer PC-free hardware solutions for broadcasting and receiving streaming media over the Internet that use Barix products at the core of the solution. The Barix low-latency streaming application essentially reduces the usual 15-30 seconds of delay from PC-based encoders to approximately 200-500 milliseconds — an enormous benefit for live sports broadcasting, talk shows or other two-way interactive programming. The application can be utilized over a standard broadband (DSL/cable) infrastructure and public Internet connection using very good compression ratios (between 50-200 kpbs) to achieve high audio quality.

Jonathan Speaker, COO of Streamguys, Inc., stressed that reducing audio delays in Internet radio will create a far better listener experience and ultimately increase public interest. “Real-time audio delivery is of high importance in any two-way listening experience. Broadcasters delivering a live program to multiple outlets cannot afford a 30 second delay between what is happening in real time and what the audience is hearing,” said Speaker. “As the program distributor we can address the delay challenge by situating the Barix units on both ends of our IP delivery platform. And since the Barix Instreamer and Exstreamer operate PC-free, we can reduce costs for our customers by removing costly hardware, while also improving stability with the elimination of system crashes and viruses often associated with Windows and Linux operating systems.”

The low-cost of the Barix Instreamer ($400 U.S.) and Exstreamer ($200 U.S.) means that stations can better afford to broadcast at higher bit rates, resulting in improved audio quality of their Internet audio — an option that might not be available to broadcasters with a more expensive, PC-based infrastructure. Barix also offers a programmable software environment for OEMs and business partners to create new and unique applications for the IP environment both inside and outside the radio broadcast industry. Custom applications can be developed in network-, audio-, or USB-flash environments.

Barix’ Instreamer-100 encodes audio from analog and digital devices into the MP3 format in real-time for point-to-point or multipoint delivery over the Internet or IP-based systems. The serial port in the Instreamer-100 allows the operator to remotely control additional devices over the same network connection from any location. The Exstreamer-100 is an intelligent, network based audio decoder that pulls digital audio from an IP network and converts it to music or voice at the receiving address.
All Barix products feature open standards and integrate well with other software and equipment such as distribution servers, media players and IP phone systems for paging and background music applications.
