Press release from: International ARD Music Competition

/ PR Agency: RW Media Relations
The 68th ARD International Music Competition takes place in Munich from September 2 to 20, 2019 in the categories clarinet, cello, bassoon and percussion.
Organized by the Bavarian Radio on behalf of all the ARD radio stations, the ARD Music Competition with its 21 categories, which rotate annually, is the world’s largest classical music competition. The number of applicants is consistently high: this year, there were 590 applications from 50 countries and four continents. The list of countries of provenance is topped by South Korea, followed by Germany and France. The bassoon category had the highest number of applications this year, namely 171, but the other categories also registered outstanding numbers of applicants: there were 166 applications from cellists, 153 from clarinettists and 100 from percussionists.

The competition is open to young musicians who are ready to launch an international career. After a pre-selection of the submitted recordings, the best candidates have been invited to Munich. All four rounds are open to the public and take place at various concert halls in Munich.
The first category this year is clarinet (September 2 to 11) at the Carl Orff Hall of the Gasteig, followed by the first round for cello (September 4 to 13) at the Bavarian Radio’s Studio 1. The first round in the bassoon category (September 6 to 14) takes place at the Bavarian Radio’s Studio 2; the percussion category follows from September 6 to 15 at the
Academy of Music and Theatre. The semi-finals at the Prinzregententheater see the best musicians in their category compete for admittance to the final round. The final rounds take place as follows: clarinet (September 11, Prinzregententheater), cello (September 13, Herkulessaal), bassoon (September 14, Prinzregententheater) and percussion
(September 15, Herkulessaal).

The competition ends with the prizewinners presenting themselves in three concerts: on
September 18 with the Munich Radio Orchestra, on September 19 with the Munich Chamber Orchestra at the Prinzregententheater and on September 20 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Herkulessaal at Munich’s Residenz.

The unique feature of the International ARD Music Competition, which goes back to 1952, is that it ensures equal, high-carat treatment of winds, percussion, and instruments usually only found in specialized competitions. This makes the ARD Music Competition possibly the most important one in the world, paving the way for its winners to choose a
solo career or attain leading positions in renowned orchestras.

BR-KLASSIK and the ARD radio stations report comprehensively in their radio, television
and online programmes, featuring live broadcasts, special features and summaries of the
competition.
