crystals, klunker, dimestore diamonds - modern

Place: Gallery Schmuckfrage
(Berlin, Germany)
03-06-2011 - 30-06-2011
Artists: Gabriele Hinze, Polly Wales, Stephanie Hensle

For a long time jewellery provided precise information about the position of the wearer in society. The game with inclusion and exclusion lead to a specific language and form, wherein jewels took a central role. The number of those who wanted access to this form of language grew and surmounted the production of jewels - for some as well the budget they could spent on jewellery. In the 18th century rhinestones and with them their inventor Georg Friedrich Strass became celebrated stars. Georg Friedrich Strass was honoured jeweller of the king. In the 20s of the last century the youth feasted in rings with oversized artificial stones, which matched their clothes and danced the charleston. The early royally acceptance of jewels' copies was insinuating for the lasting power with whom the pure form of a facetted stone is showing off wealth and splendour until today.
The work of the three artists reflects in different ways on the use of stones in contemporary jewellery.

Gabriele Hinze developed her one technique of mounting stones and reducing at this the ring to three simple and clear elements. According to her specifications the synthetic stones applied are cut in Idar Oberstein. In the elegant reduced formed rings the deepness and colouring of the stones gets highlighted and centralized.

Polly Wales aesthetic has evolved from trying to capture an unexpected beauty found in the accidental and the incidental. Her current jewellery collections are made by casting precious stones such as sapphires, rubies and rough diamonds, directly into gold. The stones become set inside and out, part exposed and part buried within, creating pieces that resemble natural gem encrusted forms, like sparkling geodes split open, or discoveries from the deep.

Stephanie Hensle diminishes the precious and regular grinding of jewels into multidimensional extensive stones made out of silver or gold. The shimmering shine and transparency of the jewel gets lost - yet everyone knows
what could be in its place.
