3D Film Factory Upgrades 3D Rigs

Significant upgrades greatly improve overall quality, performance and precision of stereoscopic the 3D Film Factory's beam-splitter and side-by-side rigs.

San Diego, California - 3D Film Factory recently made significant upgrades to their line of stereoscopic 3D camera rigs, greatly improving overall quality, performance and value. The redesign included easier-to-use, more accurate camera mounts and greatly enhanced 50/50 beam-splitter glass.

By redesigning the camera mounts, users can now more easily and accurately adjust camera elevation and x-y-z axis (yaw, roll & tilt) angles as needed. The fresh mounts no longer require hex wrenches to make finite adjustment s. The new triangular bolt arrangement utilizes three, over-sized thumb fasteners to raise, lower and tilt the camera plates - all by hand. Now in a matter of seconds, the cameras can be completely re-aligned, creating perfect 3D image alignment “on the fly”. It’s the perfect solution for 3D productions on the move, capturing action, or “running and gunning”.

“The first time I used the new camera mounts – I was blown away. Very impressive. So simple, fast. It was a lot easier to use and very accurate,” says 3D Film Factory’s Director of Stereography Keith Driver. “We unveiled the new 3D rig at the Los Angeles 3-D Movie Fest May 15th. The rig was a big hit with 3D enthusiasts. We let them try it themselves so they could see how easy it worked and how accurate it was.”

Secondly, the company has decisively upgraded the overall quality and clarity of its 50/50 beam-splitter glass. The new optically improved glass is now distinctively flatter, clearer and features a better grade of coatings. The result is sharper stereoscopic 3D images with less degradation.

“After a lot of searching and testing we finally found a piece of glass that was significantly better,” said the company’s director of operations Shawn Gilmore. “It was a painstaking process and more difficult than we anticipated, but we found it and it paid off. This is a great enhancement for the rigs. It goes a long way to improve 3D picture quality.”
