The Village Sheds Light on Thailand Election
T F Rhoden—author of the popular Outrageous Thai—brings needed context to the upcoming Thai elections in his new book: The VillageBangkok, Thailand, May 14, 2011 -- A fictional account of modern-day life in the countryside, The Village offers a closer examination of the goals, dreams and aspirations of everyday voters. The Village explores the relationship between local villagers and their elected representatives. The narrative captures the dynamics of provincial life and the struggle to gain a more stable foothold in rural society. The Village draws heavily on the tensions that generate the rural-city dichotomy.
Set in the Northeastern provinces of Thailand, The Village gives additional insight on the both the psyche and motivations of rural voters—such as the Red Shirts—in a fictional setting.
T F Rhoden researched the story behind The Village during his rural placement with US Peace Corps service in Sakon Nakhon province. After his two-year service in the countryside in the Northeast of Thailand, T F Rhoden also spent an additional year in the rural North of Thailand in Tak province working with village communities and Burmese refugees.
