ILX Group describes PRINCE2 as a de facto standard that is being extensively used in the UK government and widely recognised in the private sector internationally. PRINCE2 is an upgrade on PRINCE,an acronym which means Projects in Controlled Environments.

Blue Maple recognises PRINCE2 as one of the widely accepted methods in project management that is based around a series of underlying principles and seven processes showing how to manage a project. People who would like to get accredited under the PRINCE2 Methodology can choose to go for the Foundation Level or the Practitioner Level, which is recommended for project managers.

Blue Maple further expounds that PRINCE2 dominates in the government sector and is popular in pharmaceutical and IT departments where an organisation prefers a structural approach to projects. PMBOK, on the other hand, is very popular in construction, engineering and mining sectors. It includes different types of contracts and earned value calculations which are not covered in detail in the PRINCE2 Methodology.
