Fox Run Retirement Community Quilters and Children from City Mission in Detroit to Work Together Tuesday, May 24, in Novi on a Project to Make a Banner to Hang on Mission's Wall
NOVI, MI (May 10, 2011) – Forty-five children from City Mission in Detroit will come to Fox Run retirement community in Novi on Tuesday, May 24, from 1 - 2 p.m., where they and residents will work together on a quilting project to make a banner that will hang on the mission’s wall.Fox Run residents travel regularly to City Mission to tutor the children. The upcoming quilting project will be an intergenerational celebration of creativity and teamwork. Fox Run resident Barbara Birmingham has cut a number of squares from an assortment of colorful fabrics that the children will arrange on a backing. The residents will iron these on and finish the wall quilt with the letters CITY MISSION 2011. The plan is for the 2-foot by 4-foot quilt to decorate the wall at City Mission to remind the children of their visit to Fox Run.
The Fox Run Quilters was formed six years ago when Mary Bacz, a professional quilter and artist who lives in Milford, visited Fox Run to have dinner with her dad, George Butcher. During dinner she met resident Peg Quigley, a social worker and quilter. Together they discussed how a quilting group at Fox Run could make a difference in helping people in need.
The Fox Run Quilters, which today is comprised of more than 30 residents, has made baby quilts for children of homeless parents who receive shelter and services in from The Lighthouse of Pontiac. It has also made crib quilts for babies receiving cribs from the Pontiac-based Furniture Bank.
Members of the Fox Run Quilters work in assembly line fashion: one group cuts 7-inch squares, another group designs the quilt (4 squares across and 7 squares down), another group sews the pieces together, and another group ties knots. Yet another group finishes the edges.
“We have very dedicated women who want to apply their quilting skills to community outreach,” said Quigley, who moved eight years ago to Fox Run with her husband Arlon from their former home in Troy. “We are all-inclusive: everyone who wants to help has a job.”
