Over 500,000 babies are born prematurely every year in the United States. Prematurity affects 12% of pregnancies and is the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. Women with a short cervix are at high risk of preterm birth.

After decades of research around the world, there is finally an evidence based intervention to prevent preterm birth. A study published last month reported a 45% reduction in preterm birth for women with a mid-gestation short cervix (10-20 mm) treated with Prochieve® 8%, a vaginal progesterone gel. Experts echo the study’s conclusion that these results create a need for universal cervical length assessment of all pregnant women for short cervix so that high risk women can be treated – since doing so will bring dramatic reductions in the number of babies born prematurely.

Transvaginal ultrasound is the gold standard for cervical length measurement, so all pregnant women should get this exam mid-gestation. The limited availability of transvaginal ultrasound, which requires a highly trained examiner, cannot meet this need alone. That’s where CerviLenz comes in.
