Art Beijing 2011 - More than Yin and Yang - A Review from Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund, Art Historian, Hamburg
From 29th April to 2nd May 2011 the Chinese capitol Peking (Beijing) is presenting the Sixth Edition of the Art Beijing Contemporary Art Fair at the National Agriculture Exhibition Center Beijing. The Art Beijing has established itself as the most competitive art fair in Asia. The roots of Art Beijing 2011 are firmly in the soil of Asian culture and its contemporary art communities. The 2011 “Art Unforbidden” thematic exhibition will be housed in a nearly 1,000 sq. meter space, where exhibition curators will exhibit cutting-edge contemporary, experimental and avant-garde art.
In 2011, the Art Beijing Contemporary Art Fair continues to play a key role in connecting and cultivating relationships between the worlds of art and business. In addition, it engages foreign embassies and cultural centers, inviting them to participate in the art fair. In this way Art Beijing offers a platform for communication on art and culture between China and other nations.
Most of the participating artists who were presented by the galleries are showing a wide range of styles and techniques, as there are Carol Kingston (USA), Lacey Kim (USA), Marina Podgaevskaya (Russia), Elling Reitan (Norway), Tauno Kangro (Estonia), Paolo Da San Lorenzo (Italy), Faranu (Netherlands), Monique Koenig (Germany), Ingrid-Johanna Koops (Germany) and many others.
In her work Ingrid-Johanna Koops is influenced both by Chinese and European art. About her works Ingrid says: “Since I met my teacher Xiaolan Huangpu, I could feel the tranquility, freedom and peace in the arts. So my art is deeply connected with the awareness of nature. It could open minds and hearts everywhere over the world. “ The artist, who was born in Hamburg/ Germany (known as artist G.G. JOANA) studied at the Mystic Arts Center, Connecticut/USA at Lil Maxwell. Back in Germany she visited Markus Lüpertz’ lectures at Academy Bad Reichenhall, where she developed her technique in painting. Influenced by her lecturers Helmut Middendorf and Xiaolan Huangpu, who introduced her in traditional chinese ink painting, she found her unique artistic signature. What a surprise that now, after her sucessful participation at Pool Art Miami 2010, Ingrid-Johanna Koops was invited by Gallery M (Vienna/ Bratislava/ New York) to join at Art Beijing 2011.
Besides the galleries, Art Beijing also invited non-profit art institutes (Goethe Institut Peking and German-Chinese Art Academy Hangzhou), including art museums, foundations, culture centers (The Artist Network BJ, New York) and national embassies to participate in the “Art Platform” sections. Art Beijing continues growing up, as well as its audience and community with joung and established collectors, academic curators and fine art enthusiasts. This community is looking for a certain set of resources and is taking advantage of the Art Beijing communication platform.
