Press release from: Warrior Group

/ PR Agency: Michael A. Burns & Associates
Warrior Group, a provider of premier construction services for permanent modular and conventional construction, received top honors in the Modular Building Institute’s (MBI) Awards of Distinction Contest. Warrior received first place and the Judges’ Award for the Medical Education and Training Complex (METC) at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio. In addition, a military housing complex Warrior Group built in affiliation with Clayton Building Solutions at Fort Hood, in Killeen, Texas received honorable mention. The annual contest is the industry's premier awards program, recognizing the best in commercial modular building design and construction.

The METC project at Fort Sam Houston won first place in the “Permanent Modular Construction over 10,000 Square Feet, Education” category. The Judges’ Award is given to the highest scoring entry across all of the categories. The Fort Hood housing complex for single enlisted men received Honorable Mention in the “Permanent Modular Construction over 10,000 Square Feet, Institutional and Assembly” category. Each entry was reviewed by an impartial panel of industry and non-industry construction and code experts, architects and engineers, and marketing professionals. Building entries were judged on architectural excellence, technical innovation, cost effectiveness, energy efficiency and calendar days to complete.

“Warrior Group is honored to receive these awards that recognize the high standards of quality that we employ with all our permanent modular construction (PMC) buildings,” said Sue Johnson, chief development officer, Warrior Group. “Each of these winning facilities had its own requirements that we successfully addressed in order to construct durable, comfortable buildings that will serve the U. S. military for years to come.”

The challenges facing the design-build team on the Fort Sam Houston METC project were complex and on a grand scale due the large size if the building and the system requirements of the customer. This complexity, however, made this a natural fit for the highly controlled and monitored factory modular construction process. The structure meets the strict requirements of the military for “Anti-Terrorist Force Protection” and incorporates progressive collapse prevention systems. The building also exceeds typical commercial standards for air tightness by a full 30 percent to match stringent military standards. The 335,000 square foot buildings each contain 341 modules and took 134 days to complete.

At Fort Hood, the building design provides a durable, functional living environment for single soldiers while creating a sense of community. Two "L" shaped, four-story residential wings grouped around a central courtyard contain 167,000 square feet. Using PMC for the residential wings while the common areas were site constructed enabled the building to be completed in 11 months. PMC also resulted in a more energy efficient building and the inherent green building practices of modular significantly reduced construction waste and limited environmental impacts at the building site. The final product surpasses the target requirements for air tightness and provides a high quality, energy efficient facility constructed to obtain a LEED silver rating.

MBI is the international non-profit trade association serving non-residential modular construction, including PMC. MBI’s mission is to expand the use of offsite construction through innovative construction practices, outreach and education to the construction community and customers, and recognition of high quality modular designs and facilities.
