Press release from: Crowson Law Group

Every patient consciously or unconsciously puts their trust in the hands of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for their care. As a result of this trust, it is easy for the patient to forget that doctors are human and can make mistakes. And depending on the nature of the mistake this can prove to be fatal on the part of the patient. One study conducted by the Johns Hopkins Medical School stated that “Over 250 000 people are fatally injured each year in the United States from medical errors, making it the third leading cause of fatality in this country. Only heart disease and cancer are responsible for more fatalities.” Medical errors happen more frequently than most people think. While 250 000 medical malpractice related fatalities occur each year, there are thousands more who suffer serious injuries as a result of such medical malpractice. And such injuries require costly long-term medical care.

If you suspect that your healthcare professional was negligent in any way, a Crowson Law Group attorney provides helpful tips for victims of medical malpractice. “Before doing anything else, it is important that the victim find another healthcare professional who has their best interests at heart who can take steps towards reversing any damage done by the previous doctor’s medical diagnosis or who can treat the complications caused by the error. It will be necessary for your new doctor to review your complete medical records before treating you and in some cases it may be necessary to perform certain tests.”

The attorney also mentioned that this new healthcare professional will play an important role in your medical malpractice case as he or she will provide evidence with regards to any damage or injuries resulting from the medical error you sustained.

In order for the healthcare professional to fully assess you, it is necessary for you to obtain copies of your medical records. These records will provide valuable evidence in your medical malpractice case, including the tests that were performed, medication prescribed and any surgical procedures that you had. “Medical records are important as they provide proof of any medical misdiagnosis or that a doctor failed to review your medical history before prescribing a medication.” The attorney noted that it is of the utmost importance that the patient secure copies of their medical records before filing a medical malpractice lawsuit in order for the healthcare provider not to falsify any information.

Another helpful tip provided was for the victim to keep a journal in which there are detailed notes providing information that can be relevant including missed days of work, doctors’ appointments and details about how the medical error has impacted their life. A good habit would be to write in that journal every day.

It is highly recommended that you look for and hire best Anchorage lawyers experienced in medical malpractice, who will protect your legal rights and seek recourse on your behalf. You will need to provide a lawyer with as much detailed information about the case as possible even if that information seems insignificant. A word of caution provided is to not speak with other parties involved in the medical malpractice case such as insurance adjusters or the medical professional or their lawyer.
