Delivery and Logistics as a decisive Factor in global E-Commerce

In its latest “Global E-Commerce Delivery Report 2011” Hamburg-based market research firm yStats.com shows that delivery and logistics have become an important factor for e-commerce in the competition for customers. This latest report in the “E-Commerce” series provides an in-depth analysis of recent trends and developments in global markets, making it a one-of-its-kind source of information in this format.

In the USA some traditional retailers seek to compete with the efficiency of online retailers such as Amazon.com by forging new possibilities to process online orders also at their retail shops. The most popular advertising method to boost e-commerce during holiday periods is to offer free shipping. In Japan, online retailer Amazon.co.jp has introduced free shipping for food items as a regular service and was wooing customers at the end of 2010 with a discount of 10 %. For Chinese e-commerce, logistics, in particular the delivery of goods from the warehouse to the client, is still a bottleneck as clearly illustrated in the yStats.com report.

European online retailers invest heavily in delivery and logistics
The most important delivery companies used for e-commerce in Germany are Deutsche Post (DHL), DPD, GLS, Hermes and UPS. British e-commerce portal Amazon.co.uk has in the meantime introduced free shipping for orders above 25 GBP (29 EUR) for customers from 17 European countries. In France TNT Express acquired a 50 % stake in French parcel carrier Adrexo Colis to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing e-commerce and B2C delivery sector in the country. Groupe 3 Suisses, one of the major players in European e-commerce, has also invested in modernising its logistics activities. As outlined in the “Global E-Commerce Delivery Report 2011“, in Italy Bartolini and SDA were the most frequently used logistics firms in 2010. The majority of Belgian online retailers used the national postal service for delivery of their packages, followed by courier companies, while in Poland Poczta Polska was the most popular delivery provider ahead of UPS Polska and DHL Express. In the Netherlands, one third of all online customers responded that they would purchase more goods online if delivery options were to improve. The largest Turkish B2C logistics service was founded by the private shopping website Markafoni.
