World Health Day 2011 at Pilani Rajasthan Shridhar University

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity says WHO (World Health Organization) established on 7 April 1948.

World Health Day marks the founding of the WHO and is an occasion to raise awareness of key global health issues. The theme for this year is “Anti Microbial Resistance – No Action Today No Cure Tomorrow”.

nti Microbial Resistance - AMR is resistance of a microorganism to an antimicrobial medicine to which it was previously sensitive. Resistant organisms which include bacteria, viruses and some parasites acquire the ability to withstand attack by antimicrobial medicines, such as antibiotics, antivirals, and antimalarials, so that standard treatments become not only ineffective but persist and spread to others.

AMR is a consequence of the use, particularly the misuse, of antimicrobial medicines and develops when a microorganism mutates or acquires a resistance gene. When the microorganisms become resistant to most antimicrobials they are often referred to as “superbugs”. This is a major concern because a resistant infection may kill, can spread to others, and imposes huge costs to individuals and society.

The global spread of AMR threatens the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers. Drug resistance is becoming more widespread and many infections are no longer easily cured, leading to prolonged and expensive treatment and greater risk of death.

To combat drug resistance, the set of six policy steps recommended by WHO are: (1) develop and implement a comprehensive, financed national plan (2) strengthen surveillance and laboratory capacity (3) ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines of assured quality (4) regulate and promote rational use of medicines (5) enhance infection prevention and control (6) foster innovation and research and development for new tools.

On this occasion, Prof BR Natarajan Pro Vice Chancellor on April 7, 2011 addressed the faculty and students of Way to Transform Shridhar University Pilani and highlighted the various issues pertaining to anti microbial resistance including the WHO recommended policy steps. Pointing out that AMR can be due to reasons such as inappropriate use of medicine, taking substandard doses or by not finishing a prescribed course of treatment, use of low-quality medicine, wrong prescriptions etc; Prof Natarajan urged them to spread the message of AMR to the public at large.
