I AM EQUAL PHOTO PROJECT

Seattle, WA – 28-MAR-2011 – Seattle area residents are getting ready to welcome international fashion photographer Matt Spencer and the ‘I AM EQUAL’ photo campaign when they make their next stop at The Sheraton Hotel Downtown in Seattle on 23-APR-2011 as part of their 175-city tour aiming to break the record for the world’s largest photo mosaic in history.

“As anyone could imagine, breaking a world record is an enormous undertaking, and this project is no exception,” explains project creator Jason Beckett. “We’re collecting over 100,000 photos of people from all walks of life who want to be part of history and shine a light on the unique social, humanitarian, and political issues they support. It’s a huge amount of photos and an insane amount of logistics to manage, but the rewards of seeing thousands of people join together with such a powerful message makes it worth the effort.”

The ‘I AM EQUAL’ photo campaign launched in January 2011 with an event in Sacramento California and then quickly moved on to Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Denver – collecting almost 2,000 photos since the first event. This year, the project plans on visiting more than 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada before taking the campaign to Europe in 2012.

Those wishing to participate at the Washington event are encouraged to come with a brightly-colored, solid shirt and be “camera ready” with hair and make-up done. Each person will have a temporary tattoo applied to the palm of their hand before getting in front Matt Spencer’s camera for the history-making photo and a place in the world’s largest photo mosaic.

“Even though we’re setting a world record with this project, we still want people to see something bigger in this project,” explains photographer and project co-founder Matt Spencer. “We want people to take part in this project because they have a cause or issue to support. We love to see people use their photo to represent their passion to make a change in this world; that’s so much more important than building a record-breaking mosaic.”

The individual causes and issues represented by this project are as unique as the people who take part in the campaign. Some dedicate their photo to protecting women and ending domestic violence, while others are politically active in immigration reform or fighting for marriage equality. There are some who are taking a stand for the environment and sustainable farming, and others who are seeking religious freedoms or respect as atheists. The project connects all these causes and countless others under the single mantra, I AM EQUAL – uniting these conversations into one record-breaking image of humanity.

Photos will be taken from 11:00am – 9:00pm at The Sheraton Hotel Downtown Seattle. Participation is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Project organizers recommend each participant consider making a donation during the event to the I AM EQUAL FOUNDATION to support their Global Scholarship initiative for at-risk students in developing economies. Parking is limited near the venue and event managers recommend using public transportation or carpooling to ease congestion during the event.
