Back to Basics Learning Dynamics launches “Reading is Basic Program” for Title 1 students
Wilmington, Delaware, March 28, 2011 – Back to Basics Learning Dynamics, the area’s premiere full-service educational facility, recently announced the launch of its new “Reading is Basic Program.” Currently, the company services over 150 Title I students from the Red Clay, Colonial, Brandywine, Smyrna, and Appoquinimink school districts for supplemental instruction. Back to Basics will make over 500 age-appropriate books available to Title I students. Back to Basics’ teachers will distribute 2-3 books per student, which they can take home and keep.“Since March is National Reading Month we felt that this was the perfect time to kick off the ‘Reading is Basic Program,’ explains Back to Basics Founder/Director Beverly Stewart. According to The Read Seed Inc., 61% of poor children have no books at all in their homes. And, for the poorest children in America, lack of books in their homes is the greatest barrier to academic achievement. This is simply unacceptable.”
The “Reading is Basic Program” is a joint effort between Back to Basics Learning Dynamics and the Delaware literacy organization Success Won’t Wait. Additional books will be provided to the children at regular intervals, and as new students are added to the Back to Basics’ Title I program, they will also receive age-appropriate books.
“The statistics are frightening. Children in low income households own approximately ten times fewer books than children in middle class households. The result is that the gap between low and high income children’s reading comprehension scores is over 40 points,” says Success Won’t Wait’s President Susan McNeill.
This partnership links together two organizations with a common quest: to eradicate illiteracy in the State of Delaware and provide the educational tools for success to those who need them most. Back to Basics was founded in 1985 as a tutoring service specializing in one-on-one instruction for children and adults, and quickly gained a reputation for excellence and dedication to its students’ successes, both through tutoring as well as its unique state-approved Private School. The company has consistently given back to the community in a variety of initiatives and in fact, this is the latest in a series of joint efforts between Back to Basics and Success Won’t Wait.
