NAIDEX NATIONAL BACKS REVIEW OF SEN SUPPORT IN SCHOOLS
With ministers due to unveil a major shake-up of special educational needs (SEN) support in English schools over coming weeks, children with health or learning disabilities are finally receiving the attention they deserve. Government plans to provide more tailor made support to cater for individual needs and ensure that children are supported in the best possible way mean that educational assistance for disabled children should see some positive changes. The proposals intend to replace statements, which detail the support children with the severest level of need require, with care plans, to be drawn up after just a single assessment with a child rather than the numerous checks that are currently in place. For those interested in sourcing the latest information and products for children with disabilities, there is no better place than the KideQuip Zone at Naidex National (5-7th April, Birmingham NEC). It is a space dedicated entirely to paediatrics, where SEN teachers, paediatric healthcare professionals and parents will have the chance to see the latest products available, from wheelchairs and walkers to soft play and sensory products.
Adding an element of fun and entertainment to the show is the Active Kids Zone. The zone is run by the charity Go Kids Go, who will provide a programme of free wheelchair awareness and activity sessions for all to enjoy. Professionals will be on hand to help kids brush up on their wheelchair skills and offer expert advice, and spare wheelchairs will be available for non wheelchair users to get involved as well.
Visitors to the KideQuip Zone will also have the opportunity to attend informative free seminars sponsored by Kirton Healthcare, which will cover topics such as sensory play and learning, sensory stories and autism. The seminars will take place in the KideQuip seminar theatre and will be held across all three days of the exhibition.
Event Director Liz Virgo commented, “SEN and child disabilities are an extremely important aspect of our industry, and we are delighted to be able to dedicate an area of the exhibition to all that is available in the paediatric sector. Our aim with the KideQuip Zone is to create as much awareness as possible for all the latest products and advancements in paediatric independent living but it’s also a great place for kids to have fun!”
Another feature of the show that is likely to be of interest to people involved in special education needs is the Communication Village which is supported by Communication Matters, an organisation committed to supporting people with communication difficulties through a wide range of activities. This area of the show is home to a large number of communication aids and all the latest technology from companies working in the sector. Exhibitors in the Communication Village will include Speaks4me, Chatting Independently and BT Plc, plus a whole host of others.
If you are involved in caring for disabled children, visiting Naidex National this year is a must. For a full list of timetables, seminar speakers and to see the Active Kids Zone programme please visit www.naidex.co.uk
