SGS Successfully Completes Underground Survey Services for Cartagena Refinery Expansion Project

In September 2010 SGS Industrial Services in Colombia was assigned the contract to conduct Underground Survey Services for the expansion project of the Cartagena Refinery. From October 1 to December 30, 2010, SGS successfully carried out a comprehensive investigation to identify and locate underground obstructions in order to avoid any health and safety risks during the construction works.

Any construction activity requires a comprehensive Underground Survey, conducted by a reliable third-party inspection, verification and testing company, in order to avoid health and safety risks as well as prevent damage to existing utilities.

Due to its extensive experience and competence in projects of this kind, SGS Colombia was assigned the contract to perform Underground Survey Services for the expansion of the Cartagena Refinery, a strategic project for Colombia, which aims to expand the refinery’s capacity from 80,000 barrels of crude oil a day to 140,000 barrels.

From October 1 to December 30, 2010, SGS’s team of nine experts carried out comprehensive onsite field surveys to identify and locate underground obstructions, including but not limited to underground pipe and sewers, abandoned piles and foundations as well as underground electrical and instrument cables and duct banks. Measurements were carried out from the surface in accordance with SGS’s health and safety policy. The survey work was performed with minimal disruption, using infrared cameras and radio detection equipment. The positions of the underground obstructions were then marked onsite and plotted to existing drawings.

Due to the substantial experience of its highly qualified staff, SGS Colombia successfully completed the Underground Survey Services to the full satisfaction of the client. With SGS’s help all underground obstructions were identified and located, helping to avoid health and safety risks throughout the construction works. Furthermore, SGS’s professional investigation prevented cost escalation, which could result from damage to existing utilities.
