CD Replication it is claimed is rapidly becoming a thing of the past but is this really the case? Let’s take a look at how media has evolved and the actual demand and requirements for today.

Before the music CD we had vinyl and cassette and of course no internet (or digital) therefore all music was bought on either of these two physical formats. Record labels in particular were happy because only they could provide the way to distribute and market on mass scale meaning very few independent releases were around. Even in these days however the main aim for the labels was to promote and sell albums and singles were simply tools to do just that! It was not the case a single would generate much profit as retail value was low yet production costs very similar to that of manufacturing an album. The only reason for the single was to get high enough sales to promote more radio play / promotion therefore persuading the public to like the artist and buy the album. Album sales made the profit due to far higher retail value with similar manufacturing costs to the single.

Along came the 1980’s and CD replication was born. After initial reluctance the public quickly took to this new format and not only bought the latest releases on CD rather than vinyl or cassette but also started to replace their original albums on new digitally re-mastered CDs. Record labels were in a no lose situation because sales had never been higher and back catalogues were re-issued for even greater sales volumes. The Single still existed, now on CD, but still purely as promotional tools for the albums as profit was still low due to sales costs against manufacturing costs.

Record labels panicked because they did not grasp this new concept straight away and hence the sob stories of so much lost revenue and volume sales due to downloads. But if you look at the true picture, the download market has only actually replaced the singles market as consumers did not see the need to spend pounds for one song when you could download for pence but when you consider the singles have only really been used as marketing tools to promote the album, you can start to see why the volume for CD replication requirement has fallen. When there is too much capacity for demand it is obvious it will reduce but it has not died out because album sales for the physical CD album are still stronger than album downloads. Consumers it seems consider it better value for money to own an album for which they have paid good money for rather than download.

There are many other reasons the doubters of the CD life are wrong which can be addressed but it certainly seems there is still much demand for CD replication.
