MAG will leverage fiber cutting process breakthrough
New system launches flexible, economic processes in the automotive, electronic and consumer goods industriesGöppingen, January 4, 2011 - The new fiber cutting and dosing underscores the pioneering role of the machine builder MAG in developing modern manufacturing processes for composites applications. MAG's new FiberCut Unit implements process technology innovations in the cutting process of technical fibers, e.g. for the manufacture of SMC, BMC compounds (Sheet/Bulk Molding Compounds) or fiber reinforced thermoplastics. With this technology, the material base of a compound (new types of fibers) can be directly effected which helps to produce the components even more efficiently and flexibly. Further advantages are found with the developed cutting processes and process technologies applied in the new fiber cutting and dosing unit.
The new FiberCut Unit from MAG was specifically developed for the cutting of fiber types which are difficult to cut such as glass, carbon, polyester, aramid, and natural fibers. The endless strands are supplied to the cutting modules (patent pending) by two feeding units that can be operated at different velocities. The cutting unit has a modular design and consists of two or more spindle modules allowing four cuts per rotation and module. Once the cutting process has been completed, the fibers drop for example onto a velocity-controlled conveyor belt creating a defined, homogenous spread pattern, a fiber mat. Other applications include e.g. direct cutting and dosing of fibers into a BMC or an injection molding process.
With this new innovative technology, MAG can cut and dose various fiber types
and two lengths simultaneously, depending on the fiber feed rate and the spindle speed, each of which can be adjusted individually. This helps to increase system productivity and enables new, currently not available compounds for the innovative parts of tomorrow.
Advantages at a glance
* Spindle speed and fiber feedrate can be adjusted individually
* Fiber distribution can be adjusted individually
* Online monitoring of cutting process
* Cutting head module with two cutting blades for highest productivity
* Modular design enables large fiber distribution widths
* PC-based control system with simple operation via touch screen
