This membrane thus allows ions to separate through the combination of the size and electrical effects of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and the ionic interaction mechanism of the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Commercial nanofiltration membranes have a fixed charge through dissociation of surface groups such as carboxyl groups or sulfonated acids. The pore size of the nanofiltration membrane is too small to reject solids that do not have a small charge, while the surface electrostatic properties allow the delivery of monovalent ions. These properties make this membrane useful for fractionation and selective removal of solutes in complex process streams.
Asia-Pacific and North America collectively accounted for more than half of the share of the global market revenue in 2016. In the same year, Asia-Pacific dominated the market due to rise in water scarcity and growth in population.
