Holding the industry to a higher security standard in response to the Gawker Media hack

In response to the security implications of the massive data breach at Gawker Media, Spetnik Solutions and its president, Aaron J. Spetner, would like to ensure all customers, clients and partners that this issue is isolated to Gawker Media and that Spetnik Solutions follows strict security protocols in all of its developments.

While the data breach came at the hands of a group of rogue hackers, Gawker Media is entirely at fault for the information that was subsequently released. With all applications created at Spetnik Solutions, passwords are protected with one-way encryption, in which login information is processed by encrypting the submitted password with the same algorithm it was created with and comparing it against the originally encrypted password. Although Gawker Media has since published a statement claiming the compromised passwords were encrypted, it appears that the company could have done more to protect its users' sensitive information.

Passwords should always be protected with one-way encryption. Even in the event of a data breach, these security measures make it impossible to decrypt stored passwords and publish them online, as was the case in the Gawker Media hack. Moving forward, we believe the industry as a whole should be held to this standard because our users' personal privacy is a top priority.
