How Ayurvedic Treatment Evolved Over The Ages

Ayushmaanbhavah.com: Not many people know this, but Ayurveda is the oldest system of healing and wellness in the world. The Ayurveda system is known to be around 5000 years old and it is the foundation for other ancient medicinal systems such as those practiced in Taoism, Tibetan, Buddhism, Greek, Chinese, Roman, Persian and Egyptian cultures. Each of these medicinal systems is quite distinctive, but their foundation is based on the concepts and techniques described in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic treatment is considered as the first world medicine and it is the most comprehensive in its knowledgebase.

Writings on Ayurveda and Ayurvedic treatment were first created by one of India’s greatest sage Veda Vyasa. It was Veda Vyasa who is said to have provided insights about aspects such as virtues, ethics and self-realization, as applicable to the practice of Ayurveda. Some groups also believe that Ayurveda was developed by God and passed onto his angels and eventually to humans. It is also believed that knowledge about Ayurveda and Ayurvedic treatment was received by sages and seers while they were in deep meditation. Suchknowledge included various aspects such as prevention, healing, longevity and surgical procedures.

Ayurveda is also linked to the Vedas, which includes Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. A significant section of Ayurveda knowledge has been derived from Atharva Veda. Ayurveda is also described in Rig Veda, where the three elements (doshas), Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water) have been explained.

Ayurveda gained prominence in 8th century B.C.E., after an updated version of all Ayurvedic knowledgebase was made available by great sage Atreya. His writings were collectively known as Charak Samhita, which is considered as the foundation of all Ayurvedic treatment practiced today. Surgical methods and techniques were added by Sushruta around 5th century B.C.E., which came to be known as Sushruta Samhita. Together, these two bodies of Ayurvedaknowledgebase emerged as a comprehensive, scientifically verifiable medical system. It allowed medical practitioners from around the world to test the various forms of Ayurvedic treatments and practices and establish it as an effective means of wellness, healing, and rejuvenation.

In the present context, Ayurveda and Ayurvedic treatments are being practiced not only in India, but globally as well.
