Renal Cell Carcinoma Knowledge Centre launched on EU doctor website

12-08-2010 09:11 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: EPG Health Media

The launch of a new interactive online ‘Knowledge Centre’ on Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) has been announced by EPG Health Media. The Knowledge Centre is designed to support healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with RCC and they are invited to access the resource for free at EPG Online (http://www.epgonline.org/Renal-Cell-Carcinoma/).

RCC is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. While it is a global problem, RCC rates are highest in North America, Europe and Australia. Numerous factors have been associated with an increased risk of RCC, including obesity and smoking, though it has been suggested that the worldwide increase in incidence may be explained in part by an increase in detection due to use of enhanced imaging techniques.

Initial treatment is most commonly surgery to remove the tumour, which is resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Although they have yet demonstrated improved survival, targeted cancer therapies have improved the outlook for RCC.

Sponsored by Novartis Farma S.p.A, the Renal Cell Carcinoma Knowledge Centre includes a classification of tumour types, diagnosis and staging of the disease and a full management and a treatment section including information on surgery, systemic treatments, clinical factors and guidelines.

“Healthcare professionals face a huge challenge in identifying RCC and also in deciding appropriate course of treatment for individual RCC patients.” Said Chris Cooper, EPG Health Media “By working with our partner Novartis we aim to provide doctors visiting epgonline.org with a resource that supports them in making these important decisions.”

“The RCC knowledge center is a clear example of our commitment to provide educational support to our health professionals in this disease.” Said a Novartis Oncology spokesperson “Novartis Oncology provides healthcare solutions that address the evolving needs of patients and societies through consistently delivering innovative therapies which significantly reduce the burden of cancer, we will: improve and extend the lives of cancer patients as we make therapies broadly available; become the premier Oncology company, respected by customers, competitors and society.”
