New multi-language Transplantation Knowledge Centre for healthcare professionals launches on epgonline.org
A new clinical resource has launched on epgonline.org, the website for healthcare professionals. The Transplantation Knowledge Centre is intended as a learning tool to provide online access to information on a variety of topics related to transplantation, including surgical procedures and future developments in the field.Although short term survival of transplantation surgery is excellent (>90%), long term survival rates are poor due to recurrence of disease, development of chronic rejection or complications related to long term immunosuppression1. Global reports for 2013 estimated that more than 117,000 solid organs were transplanted. These comprised: kidney, 78,952; liver, 25,029; heart, 6,270; lung, 4,834; pancreas 2,474; and small bowel, 174. The total number of organs transplanted globally increased by around 2.6% from 2012. However, this represents less than 10% of the global need for transplantation2.
The Transplantation Knowledge Centre is available in four European language editions: English, German, Italian and Spanish. It can be accessed in full and at no cost to registered epgonline.org members: https://www.epgonline.org/transplantation-knowledge-centre/en/index.cfm.
The resource is divided into two main sections. The ‘Transplantation Overview’ provides fully referenced information on the epidemiology of transplantation, surgical procedures, long-term outcomes, immunosuppression and future developments in the field of transplantation. It has been reviewed for clinical accuracy by experts Gary Levy and Markus van der Giet.
The ‘Congress Highlights’ section hosts video discussion highlights, which took place during a major Transplant Congress held in Boston, USA in June 2016. Faculty experts gathered to discuss hot topics from the event. Expert commentary is delivered by Friedrich Thaiss and Franco Citterio for the English version of the video discussion. The other language editions feature: Franco Citterio, Paolo Grossi, Mario Carmellini, Markus van der Giet, Friedrich Thaiss, Duska Dragun, Gavela Martínez and Sonia Pascuale who represent their respective countries.
Dr Toby Galbraith, Director of Content Strategy for epgonline.org, said: “We are delighted to provide this exciting new resource for physicians interested in transplantation. The field is at an exciting stage and we look forward to supporting healthcare professionals with quality medical content.” The Transplantation Knowledge Centre has been developed by epgonline.org, supported by an educational grant from Novartis Pharma AG, who provided a review for clinical accuracy.
